The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to advancing information technology education for business professionals. AITP Lone Star is a 501(c)(6) organization registered in Texas, serving members online and through local communities across the state, including the DFW, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio metro areas.

History


1949: The group was first organized in Chicago, United States, in 1949 as the National Machine Accountants Association (NMAA).[3]


1951: The State of Illinois granted the NMAA a charter on December 26, 1951. It soon had over 20 chapters.


1952: Harvey W. Protzel, systems manager for Protzel's Company, was elected the first International President at the 1952 First Annual Convention in Minneapolis.


1962: In 1962, it adopted the more inclusive name, Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), and in 1996, the present name.The Association began its certification program with the Certificate in Data Processing (CDP) professional examination, first held in 1962 in New York City.


1970: In 1970, it added the Registered Business Programmer (RBP) examination. In 1974, the Association joined in establishing the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals (ICCP) to administer the examination program and stimulate industry acceptance of the examinations. The certification is now called Certified Computing Professional (CCP).


1969: In 1969, the Association created the annual DPMA Man of the Year Award, awarding it (incongruously, given its name) to Dr. Grace Murray Hopper. After Dr. Ruth Davis of the US National Bureau of Standards won the 1979 award,[4] it was renamed the Distinguished Information Sciences Award.


2017: In 2017, the Association was purchased by CompTIA.[5]


2018: In 2018, CompTIA began deemphasizing Professional Chapters and the AITP DFW chapter closed and reconstituted as the Association for Business Technology

Professionals (ABTP) led by Mike Rochelle, President and Bill Fly Past President and former National AITP President.


2019: In 2019, CompTIA rebranded the national AITP as CompTIA IT Pro and Student Membership.


2024: In 2024, CompTIA gifted the name and copyrights of AITP back to remaining AITP leaders in Chicago. Under Paul Dittman’s leadership, the National Board of Directors is slowly reconstituting a loose affiliation of chapters, which are again growing nationally.


In May, 2024 Paul Dittman provided Bill Fly and Mike Rochelle the agreement to rebuild an AITP Lone Star chapter. Mike, Bill, Harish Rajagopalan and Brian Williams, founders, began online chapter meetings immediately reestablishing the brand and Online chapter serving all of Texas. Bill, Mike, Harish and Brian were soon joined by Akshay Chopra, Joe Vaughan, Shankar Subramanian, and Emily Bell-Wootten.


2025: July of 2025, the Texas 501c3 filing was completed and organization formalized.
